Red Hat's upcoming community Linux release expands the real footprint of open source virtual technology.
Virtualization has been a big push this year for Linux vendor Red Hat (NYSE: RHT). It's also a big area of focus for the Red Hat-sponsored Fedora Linux 12 release, which is due out next week.
The Fedora Linux distribution has been including virtualization technologies beginning with the Fedora Core 5 release in 2006 and has been steadily adding new virtualization features ever since. In Fedora 12, the open source Linux community project is adding new technology to improve virtualization memory management and performance.
The Fedora 12 release comes on the heels of Red Hat Enterprise Virtualization (RHEV) release at the beginning of November.
"There is an immense number of virtualization improvements and features in this release,"Fedora Project Leader Paul Frields told InternetNews.com. "These things will affect anyone using virtualization across the board."
On the memory management side, Fedora 12 has support for huge memory pages. Typically, x86 CPUs provide their memory allocations in 4KB page increments but with huge pages the limit is raised to 4 MB sized memory pages. Frields explained that using huge pages will make for improved virtualization performance depending on how the guest workload is configured.
How memory is allocated across virtual guests is also addressed in the Fedora 12 release. Frields noted that a key new feature is the ability of the virtualization hypervisor to understand duplicate pages across guests.
"So if, for example, you're running a host that has ten or twelve instances of the same operating system ... a large number of their memory pages might actually be duplicated across guests," Frields said. "So the system has the ability to find those pages and simply point them to one page on the host's memory. So the actual memory used drops by quite a bit."
Making changes to virtual operating systems instances has often been a manual process that has required system administrators to boot the guest operating system. That process changes in Fedora 12 with a new technology called libguestfs.
"What libguestfs does is it allows you to manipulate disk images for virtual guests without having to actually boot the systems up and interact with the operating system," Frields said. "Normally you would have to start them up and either log in or deliver some kind of script and boot the guest to run it. With libguestfs, you could script changes to make directly to the filesystems of the guests without the need to boot them at all. It makes life simpler for administrators."
While booting each individual virtual guest is a process that Fedora 12 eliminates for system changes, it on the other hand also includes improvements to how virtual guest booting works.
Fedora 12 includes the GPXE, which replaced the older Etherboot technology for remotely booting a system via PXE (define).
"GPXE makes for a flexible system for network booting of your virtual guests," Frields said. "Now ... when installing a virtual guest, you can literally point it at a Web repository on a local network or in the cloud, and GPXE understands how distributions place their files for installation. And it is able to boot the guest via PXE and then retrieve the pieces it needs and boot the guest."
Back when Fedora first embraced virtualization in 2006, the technology wasn't always easy to use and manage. That's no longer the case, according to Frields.
"It's a much faster process now to go from 0-60 in virtualization," Frields said. "It's practically trouble-free and almost a brainless proposition."
Fedora 12 is set for its official release on Nov. 17.
Web 2.0 Expo: The Power Of Less
The Web 2.0 Expo New York returns to the Javits Convention Center on Nov 16- 19 with a show focused on the power of less.
The Expo's "Power of Less" theme isn't merely a concession to the reality of tight budgets and lingering economic uncertainty. It also recognizes that realignment presents opportunities and that Web companies benefit from focus.
"A lot of companies are being forced to make do with less right now," said Jennifer Pahlka, Web 2.0 Expo general manager and co-chair. "We realized when the economy started collapsing that we might be in unique position to help companies embrace it rather than fear it."
Pahlka points to Twitter as an example of a business built on a very narrow idea, noting that the company has refused to lard its service with features. Instead, the company has relied on its growing developer ecosystem to fill in the gaps. "Twitter only does one thing," she said. "By choosing to do less, that's how they've really grown. They don't compete with their own ecosystem."
The New York version of the Web 2.0 Expo differs from the show's West Coast incarnation. "In New York, what we're really trying to do is capture the spirit of the entrepreneurial community and Web community there," said Pahlka. "The New York investment community is a little bit more interested in seeing a business plan with revenue from the start."
The Expo also caters to industries with long histories in the region: advertising, design, and finance. The design sessions this year, said Pahlka, are particularly strong, and she expects many graphic and identity designers to attend, seeking to enhance their understanding of interaction design.
For the first time, there will be an East Coast Launch Pad program, where new five start-ups will make their five-minute pitches to the crowd.
The show's lineup of keynote speakers includes Yousef Khalidi, a distinguished engineer on Microsoft (NSDQ: MSFT)'s Windows Azure team, IBM (NYSE: IBM) research scientist Ching-Yung Lin. Microsoft researcher Danah Boyd, British Telecom's VP of Web services Kevin Marks, Genevieve Bell from Intel's digital home group, Digg CEO Jay Adelson and Digg founder and chief architect Kevin Rose, and Beth Simone Noveck, US deputy CTO for open government, to name a few.
Among the exhibitors are companies such AlertSite, Awareness, Blogtronix, CrowdCampaign, CyberNet Consulting, Geanium, KonoLive, Meetup, mypage.it, Mzinga, Qtask, Universal Mind, Verio, and Website Magazine.
In addition to keynote presentations, the Expo will feature a new Government 2.0 track, intensive Bootcamp workshops, a trade show and networking events. Other sessions are organized around the following Web-oriented themes: Landscape & Strategy, Design & UX (user experience), Social Media, Development, Fundamentals, Web 2.0 at Work, Mobile, Performance, and Analytics.
The Web 2.0 Expo New York runs from November 16 through November 19 at the Javits Convention Center.
The Benefits of Forum Marketing
Forum marketing is one of the most often overlooked and underestimated forms of marketing a product or website online. Many marketers think that since web forums typically apply the “nofollow” attribute to links, there isn't much benefit to this form of marketing. While it is true that many popular forums do not follow links, some still do. Besides, gaining PR isn't necessarily the goal of forum marketing, gaining traffic and web credibility should be.
Here are a few of the reason that I recommend you consider using forum marketing as part of your overall online marketing strategy:
- There are many great forums for just about any market that can be accessed for FREE!
- Adding valuable information to a forum thread can help add credibility to your website in the eyes of the other forum users.
- Posting often on popular forums can be a good source of very targeted traffic.
- Most forums allow you to use any anchor text for your signature links which can help you gain traction for your targeted keywords.
Use this free keyword research tool to find the best anchor text for your signature links.
The most important thing to remember about forum marketing is that, like blog commenting, you need to be adding value to the thread or conversation whenever you post. Random and/or off-topic posts will not only get you banned from the forum for spamming, it can also greatly hurt your site’s credibility and your online reputation. Forum marketing does take time and effort, but so does just about any good marketing method. A great side-benefit of forum marketing for me has been that I learn so many great tips and techniques just from reading the forum posts!
Does an Organic Search Presence Help Paid Result Performance?
Study Finds Organic Results Increase Paid Search Clicks
A study from a couple of NYU Stern professors has found that organic search engine results can play a direct role in whether or not a paid listing is clicked. Basically, if this research is any indication, if your business has both a paid result and an organic result appear at the same time, you have a better chance of your paid result getting clicked than if the organic result had not appeared.
Professors Anindya Ghose and Sha Yang have highlighted the following findings:
- On average, the impact of organic listings on paid advertising is 3.5 times stronger than vice-versa, possibly because of the tendency of consumers to trust organic listings more than paid ads.
- The positive association between paid and organic listings increases advertisers’ profits by at least 6.15% when compared to profits in the absence of either of them. The positive association is strongest when advertiser-specific keywords are used and weakest when brand-specific and generic keywords are used.
- Click-through rates, conversion rates and total revenues are higher when both paid and organic listings are present simultaneously than when paid search ads are absent.
- The combined click-through rates are 5.1% higher when paid and organic listings are present simultaneously than when only the organic listings are present.
- The combined conversion rate increases 11.7% when paid and organic listings are present simultaneously than when organic listings alone are present.
- Paid search advertising drives up to 54% of total revenue growth.
The professors used "a unique panel dataset of consumer responses to keyword ads on Google" to conduct their research. The complete findings from the study are evidently available in a paper entitled "Analyzing the Relationship between Organic and Sponsored Search Advertising: Positive, Negative or Zero Interdependence?" It's 52 pages long.
"These findings have important implications for the incentives of search engines to strategically modify the rankings of their organic search listings in order to boost their revenues from paid search advertisements," says Professor Ghose.
Ghose's point is an interesting one. Nobody's making any accusations here, but would search engines tweak organic results specifically with the goal of increasing the performance of paid results, and bringing in more revenue?
Microsoft PDC09: Internet Explorer 9 is coming
LOS ANGELES -- Windows President Steve Sinofsky gave some details on the development of the next version of Microsoft's Web browser, Internet Explorer 9.
He said the browser would be more interoperable, and its performance would be improved from IE 8. The development team has been working on the new browser for three weeks.
IE9 will support DirectX and other standards, including CSS3, HTML5.
Sinofsky gave a brief demo of animations running in Internet Explorer 9 in his keynote today at PDC. He also showed its ability to draw rounded borders and its sharper image display.
At least in the demo, the animations ran more smoothly compared with the "ka-chunk, ka-chunk, ka-chunk" of Internet Explorer 8, as Sinofsky described it.
"We intend to make sure Internet Explorer represents the very best browser for Windows and represents the most world-class browsing," Sinfosky said.
He said the devlepment team has been focusing on improving the performance of the browser as measured by Acid3 tests.
Internet Explorer, which at one point dominated the market for browsers, has been steadily losing share, mostly to Mozilla's Firefox. Microsoft has a little less than 65 percent of the market and Mozilla has 24 percent. Other competitors include Google Chrome, Apple Safari and Opera.
Facebook Business Guide: How Companies Can Utilize Facebook Pages For Social Media Marketing
Did you know Facebook is a great tool for your business? Is your company utilizing the new features of Facebook pages to do social media marketing? If you are not yet leveraging the power of social media to boost your sales or engaging your customers, it is time you seriously take action on this front.
Facebook was originally conceived as a place to stay in touch with lost college mates. Time has passed since then, and now Facebook has become the largest social media in the world by far, with more than 300 million active users and a reported growth of 513.7% in the first six months of 2009 alone.
With Nielsen recently reporting Facebook on the tail of large companies like Google, Microsoft and Yahoo!, the company will probably grow even more in the second half of 2009 as well.
That said, how can you take advantage of this stunning popularity to create new opportunities for your company and reach a broader audience trough social media?
Facebook has just come to rescue by introducing some important changes to its business pages, which now allow even more interaction and engagement that you can turn to your advantage.
With this roll-out, everything changes. Brand's actions are now shared across the network, finally allowing them to participate as members of the community rather than remaining passive spectators.
Let's look together at the main changes:
- The wall tab will become the official landing page for Facebook users, making pages more useful than before to showcase newest content and stimulating conversations with fans.
- Users can select which tab to show to non-Facebook users as the landing page. This is particularly useful to let everyone access relevant information or specific content you want to promote even to those users without a Facebook account.
- Content posted on the wall now will appear more often inside the News Feeds of your fans. Curating the wall will then be crucial to drive traffic to your page by spreading viral content.
- The status update will gradually substitute inbox messages when it comes to sharing small bits of content with fans in a less obtrusive way.
- Brands can sync their Twitter and Facebook accounts to automatically post selected tweets to Facebook as status updates.
In the first part of this Facebook Business Guide, you can find some key valuable strategies to help you leverage the most out of the communication and marketing potential available inside the new Facebook Pages features.
